Studying, moving out, making new friends, and experimenting: they’re all part of being young. But for some, this phase involves risky encounters with alcohol and drugs, sometimes with tragic outcomes. In BNNVARA’s ‘Van de Wereld’, the stories are told of young people who lost their lives in accidents involving substance use. Family and friends put a face on the headlines that reduced them to only a name and cause of death. Who were they? What dreams did they have? And what lessons can we learn from their experimenting?
Our approach
After a successful collaboration on the first season, BNNVARA asked us again for the second installment of Van de Wereld. The program’s set features a large cube in which family and friends take place as they share stories about their loved ones who have tragically passed away. Our tasks involved bringing this cube to life in post production with video footage and images as well as texts to give the impression that it has a built-in holographic display. On top of this, we have recreated the set in a 3D environment to produce more camera angles and movements.
Season 1
For the first season, the visual concept was quite different. The cube wasn’t present on set, but fully generated in post. Everything was filmed in a greenscreen studio, allowing us to transform the scene into an imaginative world. By blending 3D and 2D animation, we created an environment where live action scenes and animation merged.
